Honors Field Trip ~ Spring 2014

Dr. Ron Walker and Dr. Martha Strickland guided the Honors end of semester field trip to Winterthur Museum, Garden & Library and Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, PA. on March 29, 2014.  At Winterthur the group got a personal tour of one whole floor of the mansion, in addition to a behind-the-scenes, closed-to-the-public tour of the research and refabrication labs where Winterthur staff uses the latest techniques to restore and repair furniture, paintings, fabrics, etc. We also viewed the popular Downtown Abbey gallery exhibit which showcased actual costumes and accessories used in the PBS series. Next we traveled to Longwood Gardens where we received a guided tour of the indoor exhibit gardens and a behind-the-scenes tour of Longwood's facilities for producing the plants they use. Whether they force blooms, treat plants for disease, or develop new varieties of plants, all the steps leading to the plant specimens needed to populate the hundreds of acres of gardens occur here. Although it was a cold, rainy day, we learned a lot and had a great time.
